Smackdown Champion Quest VS Finding Winnie

Final Smackdown Quest VS Finding Winnie

Grade 4 Mini Mighty Smackdown

Opinion

The winner of our final Smackdown with a vote of 27/49 was QUEST, by Aaron Becker!
We chose this wordless picture book for many different reasons, one of the most important was that it demanded that we use our imagination to explain the story. This forced the reader to really pay attention to the images.  Depending on who the reader is, the perspective could also change. It seemed that there was suspense on every page, leaving the reader have to see what was happening instead of just reading the words.  The details in the illustrations really brought out the characters different emotions and personalities. We loved the idea of how it was kids who saved the king and his whole kingdom.  This helps remind the reader that kids can do BIG things and make a difference in the world.  This book shows cooperation and teamwork throughout. The illustrations were like a beautiful painting that came to life. The illustrations started out as dull gray in colour and moved into to bright colours as the adventure unfolded and new crayons were found.  You would really like this book if you like to use your imagination and like reading about magical worlds.

Final Smackdown Grade 4 Room 303

Final Smackdown
Is There a Dog In This Book? VS Quest

Opinion
After a vote of 24/26 Quest, by Aaron Becker was selected as our class Smackdown Champion.
The class had many reasons for choosing this wordless picture book. We loved the idea of how it was kids who saved the king and his whole kingdom.  This helps remind the reader that kids can do BIG things and make a difference in the world. Because there were no words to the story, we had to use our own imagination to follow what was happening and make the many connections that were happening throughout the book.  The class enjoyed how Aaron Becker used cold grey colours and then warm, bright rainbow colours to show the difference between good and evil.  It was important that there were many connections between the first book in the sequel (Journey) and this second book.  Mr. Becker also had us wondering and predicting on every page.   This is a book that all people can love no matter their age. You will like this book if you like stories with adventure, action, suspense and using your own imagination.

Smackdown Semi-Final

The Uncorker of the Ocean Bottles VS Quest

With a vote of 11/13, Quest won our Smackdown Semi-final. This wordless picture book, added emotion and movement with page. Quest is a book with illustrations, that add to the story.  This is a book for people who love adventures and lots of action on each page. We feel that Quest was the story that encouraged our imagination the most.  This story is full of many different details. The illustrations were very colourful (with rainbows shades) and they added to the telling of the story.  We noticed that there was a lot of mystery and suspense, that kept the reader guessing.  We loved that there are lots of hints about what is going to happen. This book is a great sequel to Journey and doesn't disappoint.

Smackdown Semi-Final -Is There a Dog in This Book? VS Nerdy Birdy

Is There a Dog in This Book? VS Nerdy Birdy

Smackdown Semi-Final

Opinion

The winner with a vote of 8/13 is Is There a Dog In This Book?  The setting is interesting because it takes place in different rooms of the house. We chose this book because the characters were funny and we liked when the cats ran away from the dog.  The smaller cat encouraged bravery and helped the other cats not be afraid of the dog, which is something people should also do.  There was a great lesson about friendship in this book, that we could also learn.  This book was great because we had many wonders and it made us think.  The illustrator, included secret pictures on the back and front covers, this was a great surprise.  Is There a Dog In This Book, had lots of suspense, especially when the cats were hiding.  We like how the cats feelings about the dog changed from fear to worry.  Often in real life, dogs chase cats but in this book Viviane Schwarz had the animals be friends.  The illustrations were interesting because the animals were different shapes and sizes. A really interesting feature is that there were pop-ups all over with pictures and words. You would like this book if you like animals as main character instead of humans.

This book made us really emotional. The reason that it is sad because of how the
Uncorker
has to do all the work and also has to check every persons letter. Our favorite drawings sky's of the book.  Another thing we like about the book is how Michelle (The author) gives so much suspense and detail.

Nerdy Birdy VS Finding Winnie

Smackdown Nerdy Birdy VS Finding Winnie

Opinion
Nerdy Birdy won 5/7.
We loved the humor and comedy. We also chose it because we liked the illustrations by Matt Davies and the story by Aaron Reynolds. This book taught us that if you can't fit in to one group, there's always another one for you to be part of. Just like the bird, Nerdy Birdy, he found a group of bird's just like him. We liked when the author, Aaron Reynolds,  made us realize that there are no such thing as a Nerd but all birds and people are cool.  The illustrations are drawn to show the personalities of the characters, using face expressions and lots of labels on the page.  You would like this book if you like books that teach a lesson about friendship and getting along.
