The Uncorker of the ocean bottles by Michelle Cuevus
pictures by Erin E. Stead   Cloth Lullaby; The woven life of Louise Bourgeois words by Amy Novesky  pictures by Isabelle arsenault
Tribe: The mighty Tigers: Michael, Gurmaan, Nicholas, Jiya.

Summary for Cloth Lullaby : While reading the book we felt sad because someone she loved left her alone. Some pages of the book were exciting and others were sad. The art was very different for example the water/river was in lines. Michelle cuevus was playing with his words at one point there was a tent and she put the letters on the tent. When she showed stars it made us think about music because of the way they were drawn. We think this book was good.

Summary for The Uncorker of the Ocean Bottles: The story is about a lonely man. Just like  Cloth lullaby this story is also upsetting but at the end the uncorker made friends before he thought he smelled like dead fish or a fisherman. He wondered if he would ever be able to get a letter from ANYONE he though it would never be possible but little did he know that a new friend will invite him. The art was also awesome. I wonder if people know people like the Uncorker.

winner The Uncorker of the Ocean Bottles :We chose this book as the winner because he is nice to everyone and it is a heartwarming book. It is the Uncorker's first time to have a letter but he needs to know who gave the invitation so he goes around trying to discover who sent it. Everyone in our group voted for this one and we gave it a rating of 10/10.

Shy by Deborah Freedman
         VS.
Finding Winnie by Lindsay Mattick

Tribe name: The Mighty Lions (Avineet, Elizebeth, Justin, Stephy)

Summary: Finding Winnie was a heart warming story about a boy and a bear who become friends. We liked it because it was a true event and because the guy had a big heart because he thought more about Winnie's happiness and not his. Winnie is a really cute cub and she is really smart. She knows how to do some tricks to practice during the first world war. Shy is a wonderful book and she likes to hide in book pages even though she is a giraffe. Shy's favourite books are about birds but she has never seen a bird in real life.

Winner: We thought Finding Winnie should win because it is a very good book and won the Caldecott medal. We think this book is off the charts and the illustrations were really realistic. We gave this book a rating of 10/10!

We love how the illustrator shows the penguin's emotions and especially how he shows his anger. It's awesome how the words and the pictures match and help tell the story! This book is the winner we voted 10/10. A child of books was a very interesting book because many of the pictures were actually made of words. We liked this book because it was about adventures. It was a cool and groovy and was definitively not what we expected!

Henry's Freedom Box; A True Story from the Underground Railroad by Ellen Levine
VS.
Journey by Aaron Becker

Mrs. Holden and Grade 4-2 (We read these together as our introduction to mini-mighty smackdown).

Summary: Both of these books are Caldecott Honor Winners. They are two completely different picture books. Henry's Freedom Box is a story about slavery and the awful things that happened to families because of slavery. Henry's story is very heartbreaking but he tries to find the good in the bad. Journey is a wordless picture book so we have to work harder as the reader to figure out what is going on. From the first page it is easy to see that the main problem is that the girl is sad and lonely. She wants someone to play with her but everyone in her family is busy. She creates her own adventure using her imagination and we found many similarities between this book and others such as Where The Wild Things Are, and Harold And The Purple Crayon. We noticed that the author/illustrator used bright colours to represent whimsical/playful things such as a kite, a ball, a scooter, sidewalk chalk, etc.

Winner: Journey 16/22 students chose this as the winning book. The reason why we liked this book so much is because the girl has a wild imagination and it shows us all the wonderful things you can do when you use your imagination. The author/illustrator did an amazing job of showing us rather than telling us this story. The pictures are full of detail and he creates suspense by adding in obstacles that the girl has to overcome. At one point we wondered if she would ever be able to leave the colourful world. Aaron Becker also does a great job of showing the characters' emotions in his drawings. We would highly recommend this book to others. We give it a rating of 10/10 overall.
