Smackdown Chloe and Lion vs Each Kindness

This was a CLOSE battle!
Out of 30 students, 17 students (one more than half the class) really loved Each Kindess.
Both stories were so interesting but one was funny and the other was serious, teaching you a lesson.

Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson

Summary
Maya is a new girl who seems to be poor because she wears second-hand clothing. Everyone at the new school ignores her and when Maya asks Chloe to play she turns away from her. Chloe finds out that each kindness is like a ripple when you throw a rock into a pond. Kindness spreads out. Chloe decides to be nice and make it up to Maya but she doesn't get a chance because Maya moved away to another house.

Opinion
25 students out of 30 really liked this book because it teaches you a lesson at the end of the story. The illustrations made them feel like it was real life. The illustrations gave us feelings....loneliness. It teaches us that you have to be nice to everyone and you never know when you'll have the opportunity to make it up to a person.

This story was a funny story.  It had a pen that was very obstinate,it was like magic.
There was a man who was going to write a story and the pen didn't write what he wanted BUT it wrote other funny things that he hated.  He threw the pen out the window and it landed inside a rich lady's car tire.  She picked it up and asked the driver "can you get me some paper?".  She wrote something but still, it didn't write what she wanted!  She lauged so hard that she put it in a house that had a room that no one ever went into and it did what any prisoner would do - break out!  It landed face up by a boy.  He picked it up and pulled out his notepad and started to draw funny pictures.  Finally, the pen worked the way someone wanted it to!

My Opinion
I really really liked this book.  It was super funny.  The illustrations were funny, especially the writing.  When the pen was joking around with the guy saying he had a huge nose and eyes I laughed in my head so hard that my mouth could have popped.

SMACKDOWN -Extra Yarn vs. Z is for... Moose

We found these two books to be very DIFFERENT.
The first book we read was Extra Yarn, a narrative story.  The second book we read was Z is for... Moose, which was a post modern type of expository book.
The class liked Z is for...Moose better than Extra . It was a funny story that was very silly, with the main character a moose interfering on almost all the pages.  The story also had a great moral which taught us an important lesson about being patient and waiting our turn. In the book the moose, couldn't wait for his alphabet page and kept trying to go on the other pages too.

Although we really liked Extra Yarn too! The vote was very close!

The second thing we liked about Z is for...Moose was the actual text. The actual text played an important role.  The font of the alphabet letter was larger and a different colour then the rest of the sentence. This made us pay attention to each letter. The illustrations were bright and colourful drawings that made the story interesting.

Z is for ...Moose by Kelly Bingham and Paul O. Zelinsky

Z is for ... Moose by Kelly Bingham and Paul O. Zelinsky

Summary

This book is an alphabet book. It is teaching about the letters of the alphabet with a lot of humour.  The story has a zebra in charge of making sure the letters are in the correct order and the animals or objects that start with that letter are on the right page.  However, a problem arises when the moose can't wait his turn and shows up on almost every page.  The zebra starts to get frustrated with the moose and replaces him with a mouse on the M page.  The moose gets angry and starts to to wreck the other pages.  Then the moose gets very sad and the zebra decides to let him help with the last page.

Opinion

28/29 people in our class liked the book and would recommend it to others to read. Our favourite part was how the whole book was so funny.  The moose did and said silly things on almost every page.  He tried to take over the alphabet book from the zebra.  The illustrations were bright and colourful drawings that made the story interesting.  The actual text played an important role.  The font of the alphabet letter was larger and a different colour then the rest of the sentence. This made us pay attention to each letter.

Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett

Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Jon Klassen

Summary

The setting of this story is a small town in the middle of winter.  The main character's name is Annabelle. Her town is very dull, where everything is black from being covered in soot and the rest is white from the snow.  Annabelle discovers a small box of yarn with every colour.  She decided to start knitting sweaters for all the people she knows.  Soon everyone was wearing a colourful sweater or hat. Annabelle even knit ones for pets, houses, trees and vehicles.  The whole town started to look bright and cozy.  It seemed that Annabelle never ran out of yarn.  People from other towns started to come to see all the sweaters and shake Annabelle's hand.  Even an Archduke, who loves fancy clothes came to see her.  He offered to buy the box of yarn from Annabelle for 1 million dollars, then two million dollars and finally ten million dollars.  She refused each time because Annabelle loved knitting and the box was special to her. The mean Archduke was angry and sent three robbers to her house to steal the famous box of yarn. They stole the box and brought it to the archduke.  When the Archduke opened the box it was empty. He cursed Annabelle with his families curse to never be happy, but she was anyway.

Did we like it?

23 out of 28 people in our class enjoyed the book.  We liked how the illustrations started out dull and then turned bright and colourful as Annabelle made sweaters for everything in the town.  The students really liked the way Jon Klassen, the illustrator, drew the sweaters to look like actual wool that has been knitted. The class enjoyed how there was more text then the other books we have read but not too much, making it still easy to read.  The students also wondered how she got the box in the first place and who it belonged to before she found it. We also liked how the ending left you wondering if Annabelle ever knit any more sweaters.

Unspoken by Henry Cole

Summary by Meadow

This story is about a girl who lives in the underground  railroad with a really nice couple.   The people had a house just for her. Every night they gave her a piece of  food and the girl was a slave.  There were these bad people who wanted to capture the girl.  Close to the end of the story, the nice people made her a doll and the dolls clothes were made out of her cloth that she got from the dinner table.

The Island by Marije Tolman and Ronald Tolman

Summary
This book is a wordless picture book. It is about a polar bear who travels from island to island. He discovers different animals on each island. Some of the islands looked like the continents that we have.

Opinion
There were only 5 out of 30 students who really liked the book. Those who didn't like it felt that the story was hard to figure out without words and the illustrations didn't have enough detail to use our imaginations. The students who liked the book thought that the illustrations were interesting.

SMACKDOWN- hello! hello! vs. Machines

We found these two books to be very DIFFERENT.
The first book we read was hello! hello!, it was a narrative story.  The second book we read was Machines, which was an expository book.
The class liked hello! hello! better then Machines. It was a funny story that was a little silly, with the main character riding all sorts of different animals (whales in the sky).  The story also had a great moral which taught us an important lesson about families and life. In the book the girl, Lydia, and her family, spent too much time on electronic technology and not enough time talking together.  This was a good reminder to us about not spending too much time with electronics and  spending more time with our families.
Where as Machines mostly just gave us information about big machines that work in the city.

The second thing we liked about hello! hello! was the actual text. There wasn't very much writing but the author used many different fonts,  making the words interesting.

The last thing we enjoyed about both books were the illustrations.  hello! hello! has drawings that were very cartoon like sketches. There was no colour in the beginning, to show how dull it was when the family didn't spend time together.  However, it was very clever that the author added more colour as Lydia, and then her family went on their adventure.
The illustrations for machines were also very interesting because they looked like beautiful paintings and we loved the flaps with more information.

SMACKDOWN - Chloe the Lion VS Mousterpiece

The differences that we found in the books were as follows:

  • Mousterpiece the mouse is recreating paintings in the museum and the illustrations on each page have only the main character and her work of art. They are drawn and look realistic.
  • Unlike  in Chloe and the Lion the illustrations are a mixture of 2D and 3D. Chloe looks like she is a flat cartoon character and the author and illustrator characters looks look like they're made of playdoh and are 3D looking.
  • In Chloe the Lion we felt like we were involved in the story because we got to see the arguing going on behind the stage where the story took place.
  • However in Mouseterpiece, our attention was lost at some points because it didn't have enough information about about the painting that she was recreating.

Machines -Go to Work in the City

Summary

This non-fiction book is about large machines that are used in a city to help with everyday jobs or emergencies.  In this story we learn about how different machines work and what they do.
The machines often do jobs that are too dangerous or too big for people but that still need to get done.

Opinion

21/28 students in our class liked this book and would read it again.  They would also recommend it to a friend or family member.
The main thing we liked about this book is that it has large flaps that you can flip to learn and see more information.  Our class appreciated that this was a teaching book and that many of the students learned something new about working machines in the city.
The illustrations were very artistic and looked like realistic paintings.

SMACKDOWN - A Home for Bird vs. Life in the Ocean

We found these two books to be very DIFFERENT.

The first difference we found was in the type of story itself.  Life in the Ocean was more of an expository book.  We found it less exciting to read but more helpful with learning.  A Home for Bird was a narrative story.  It was full of juicy details and fun to read.  It would be a good book to help cheer you up.

The second difference was with the illustrations.  Life in the Ocean has more sketch-like pictures and A Home for Bird has entertaining cartoon-like pictures.

The last difference that we noticed was with the amount of text.  Life in the Ocean had more writing on each page and at times it was tricky to read - almost like a tongue twister.  A Home for Bird had less text on each page and you could read it faster.

hello! hello! By Matthew Cordell

Summary

The story is about a girl named Lydia and her family.  Lydia's family loves playing and spending time on different electronic devices.  They are not spending very much time together, both physically (the same room) and emotionally (talking together).  Lydia discovers the outside door slightly open and a colourful leaf floats in. It is in that moment that Lydia realizes that spending time in nature is important. Along the way she observes trees, flowers, insects and many other animals.  Suddenly, Lydia gets a cellphone call from her angry mother and father to come back home.  When Lydia gets home she trades each family member their electronic device for artifacts she found outside.  At the end her whole family begins to appreciate nature and they all spend time together as a family.

Our Opinion

This book was really liked by 11/30 students in our class.  The best part about this book is how Lydia rediscovered the importance of nature and shared with her whole family.  It was really funny how when she was discovering nature she decided to hop on the animals and go for a ride. ,There were even whales and fish floating in the sky.
The illustrator did an excellent job of choosing colours for the pictures.  When Matthew Cordell drew the pictures of Lydia and her family in the beginning they were all gray  and  dull.  However, the minute Lydia discovered nature she and the outside were very colourful.  Her family also became colourful once they began to love nature and being together too!

Mousterpiece by Jane Breskin Zalben

Summary

In the corner of a museum lived a happy mouse named Janson. Every night after the museum was closed she explored the different galleries. Afterwards, her artistic spirit broke out and she entered her own little world of art, copying famous art but in her own way. One night she discovered that the paintings in one gallery had disappeared and it was closed for renovations. This made her sad so every night she painted a picture and left it in an empty room. The more she painted the happier she became. The head of the museum saw her beautiful painting and decided to give her own exhibition. Some people liked her work and others didn't but Janson's mousterpiece was not a copy of  a famous painting but instead her own imagination painting.

Opinion

Only 4 students out of 30 really liked this book. Those who liked it thought it was a great idea to use famous artwork in the story and they enjoyed how, the main character Janson, turned those famous painting into her own work.
Those students who wouldn't recommend this book felt that the author could have used more details and interesting words in the text. Some had questions like: Why was the head of the museum alright with a mouse living in his museum?
Generally we felt that it was very distracting to the flow of the story to have to go to the back of the book to find out who the real artists were.
An idea to improve this book would have been if the name of the artist had of been placed somewhere on the page along with the original work of art.

This is a non-fiction, expository book about life in the ocean and being curious.  The story has information about the ocean but is written like a narrative.  The book is focused on the adventures of Sylvia Earle, a well known oceanographer.  Sylvia was curious about nature from a young age and she spent her time exploring ponds and oceans.  Some of Sylvia's adventures include: living underwater in a deep-sea station for 2 weeks, discovering new underwater creatures, studying whales and setting new world records during her discoveries.  In this book we learn that only 5% of the ocean has been discovered and the author encourages us to learn more about this vast, deep, blue, sea.

Our Opinion

About half of our class (15/29) would recommend this book to a friend.  Most of us liked the passionate main character who followed her dreams.  It inspired us to follow our dreams as well.  Many of us liked the format of this story and how it was similar to a journal entry.  It was fun to learn something new on every page, however, the expository way that the story was written was not exciting.  It wasn't a juicy story.  Some of the vocabulary and word choices were scientific which made it tricky to follow along at times.  Almost everybody felt that the illustrations did not match the text.  The pictures were very artistic and not helpful in teaching us about what the text was saying.  Many of us would have preferred real life photographs with captions.

A Home for Bird by Philip Stead

Summary

While out foraging in the pond, Vernon found bird.        Vernon said, "Hello" but Bird said nothing.   While Vernon was trying to make Bird feel comfortable away from home, Bird refused to talk.  He just sat there silently, no matter what.  When Vernon was out of ideas, he decided to help Bird find his home.  Bird said nothing.  When they were too tired to go on,  they took some advice from a kind stranger and went inside a house.  Here they found a broken hose hanging on the wall that made a soothing "tick tock" sound as they slept.  In the morning, Bird started shouting "Cuckoo!  Cuckoo!".  It turns out that the new home was a Cuckoo clock and Bird was its owner.  He was a cuckoo clock bird all along.

Our Opinion

The majority of our class (27/30) really liked this book. The best part was how funny the story was as we re-read it (we read the story 2-3 times!).  Each time we picked up on new jokes within the story.  We really liked the character of Vernon.  He was kind, determined, and as we came to realize, a little "cuckoo".  We thought this was funny because Bird was a Cuckoo Bird all along.  Most of us (25/30) found the illustrations to be funny, too.  Especially the facial expressions on Vernon and his friends.

We also liked how it was a "circle story".  On the dedication page we found a clue to help us solve the mystery of the quiet bird.  The ending tied really nicely into the beginning.
