Life in the Ocean by Claire A. Nivola

Summary

This is a non-fiction, expository book about life in the ocean and being curious.  The story has information about the ocean but is written like a narrative.  The book is focused on the adventures of Sylvia Earle, a well known oceanographer.  Sylvia was curious about nature from a young age and she spent her time exploring ponds and oceans.  Some of Sylvia's adventures include: living underwater in a deep-sea station for 2 weeks, discovering new underwater creatures, studying whales and setting new world records during her discoveries.  In this book we learn that only 5% of the ocean has been discovered and the author encourages us to learn more about this vast, deep, blue, sea.

Our Opinion

About half of our class (15/29) would recommend this book to a friend.  Most of us liked the passionate main character who followed her dreams.  It inspired us to follow our dreams as well.  Many of us liked the format of this story and how it was similar to a journal entry.  It was fun to learn something new on every page, however, the expository way that the story was written was not exciting.  It wasn't a juicy story.  Some of the vocabulary and word choices were scientific which made it tricky to follow along at times.  Almost everybody felt that the illustrations did not match the text.  The pictures were very artistic and not helpful in teaching us about what the text was saying.  Many of us would have preferred real life photographs with captions.
